Busy busy busy!

Hey guys,

So it’s been a while since I’ve posted on here but rest assured I have been busy!

First of all, the venue I am unveiling my piece is now 100% confirmed and it will be held an In Production Studios just outside Lincoln on the 18th December! I will be posting instructions on how to get there and as soon as viewing times are confirmed I shall also be letting you know!

There isn’t much researching around the project I’m doing as it’s not your usual gallery installing or sound installation! So for research I’ve been looking in to how people have set up Art Installations and Exhibitions and then converting the information to fit the project I am setting up!

The most simple of these was a step by step guide to setting up your own Art Exhibition from WikiHow. I know this is very basic but it actually gave me a load of information and allowed me to set up a To Do/Check list regarding my installation! There were certain steps that didn’t concern my project such as looking for other artists to display and entry fees (as my project will be free to view), however it made sure I had everything I needed to prepare right in front of me!

The second of these was a book on Exhibiting photography and art which gave a practical guide for displaying any work in general. I found this a lot more helpful as it had Case Studies of other people attempting their own Exhibition. Upon reading through these case studies I realised that the people attempting these Exhibitions were attempting them on a much larger scale and more often than not, not just a one off viewing like my own project. However, this gave me information about setting it up for the day, making sure everything was planned carefully, everything was laid out perfectly for the viewers to see the artwork and making sure information on the piece was available for the project! This was accompanied by the issues with putting the pieces up and taking them down, which shouldn’t be as much of a problem for me as I am only setting up one piece of art to be viewed several times over the space of one afternoon and evening! This book also gave me the chance to check out some of the most successful installations the world had to offer and where they went right and even wrong. Though this book was primarily about displaying photography it gave me the information I needed to display my piece and all the necessary extras that make for a good exhibition.

gallery exhibit

‘You should identify your goals. ‘Ask yourself these questions: What kind of artist do I want to be? What are my goals and values? Who are my target audience and market?’

Looking at the events that are huge, in places like the ‘Victoria and Albert Museum’ and ‘Londons Design Museum’ I have noticed that there are certain key things to include to make a good event, Information on the piece, plenty to offer through the event and most of all, a well laid out and aesthetically pleasing venue. Despite all the research being on a bigger scale, it’s given me a much wider knowledge of what an Exhibition should consist of, and although it is only going to be one piece of my work, I can apply the knowledge of these larger events to mine and, hopefully, make a successful event.

I know this post has been massive but I’ve been reading through a lot of information on the subject, as well as taking part in a project involving setting up my own Sound Exhibition for multiple artists and felt it corresponded well with the academic side of this project!

On a lighter note, this coming Thursday is the final day of recording my piece and it is starting to take more shape than I ever could have imagined!

More information coming soon!

Inspiration

To give you a little idea of my working process I’ve got this track for you guys to listen to!

One of my favourite artists, ‘Dave Mcpherson’ released his first solo album last year and had four tracks on, named Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, and this is where I first drew inspiration for this project!

Listen to how he takes certain feelings from Summer and tries to show them through the music he’s written. Happy, bouncy and feel good, most people can relate these feelings to various events or memories from Summer, and that’s what I am trying to do from a very personal perspective!

Enjoy!

Progress

Hey guys! So first of all, in a lot of pain today due to the fact I have the back of a seventy year old, struggling to get out of bed! But, this hasn’t stopped me from making several steps in my project these last few days!

First of all, I should outline that the premise of this project has changed slightly and I’ll explain that now!

I am now creating music to sit against a time lapse video of a forest over a year. The musical ideas are still staying the same, keeping to my interpretation of how I want seasons to sound and still staying in two minute slots, creating an eight minute piece in total. I have found a fantastic time lapse video which you can see in my last post! Providing I get the go ahead to use this in my display, I have a very clear end goal now! I should again note that I won’t be taking any credit for the creation/participation in the time lapse video and that all the rights go to the artist who created it.

Secondly, providing that I can get the necessary equipment and the space (which is already in motion) I shall be unveiling this piece via a projection in a small gallery space just outside Lincoln! This will include the video being projected and the room being lit up with ambient mood lighting to once again, strengthen the idea that the seasons are changing. People will be able to come and listen to my piece whilst watching the time lapse I have found to accompany it! It is my hope that people will hear the audio and be able to understand certain aspects of the track and see how they reflect the seasons or how I think they reflect the seasons!

So far all the feedback for this project has been fantastic so everyone who I have shown it to, thank you for being so positive! My next step is to sort out a definite date for the unveiling, the equipment; lighting, projector, seating space etc and start the first stages of recording the piece in the studio!

Stay tuned!

Time Lapse

So I found an absolutely beautiful Time Lapse video of a forest over a year, created by the amazing ‘motionkicker’ and uploaded to Vimeo. I would love to credit the person who made this more but have no idea of their real name or their details!

Either way I would like to stress that I take no credit in making this time lapse and nor did I have anything to do with it’s production or creation. I am merely using this video as a visual support to the audio piece I’m making.

As I promised a rough demo of the Rhythm guitar a few days ago and didn’t deliver, I have made a better demo of the first four minutes with Rhythm Acoustic, Lead Acoustic and a slight bit of percussion in places! It’s by no means a nice sounding mix but it gives you a rough idea on where I’m going with this project. I shall be uploading this with the first few minutes of the time lapse so you can see the incredible amount of work that’s gone in to making it! (I should note that I have stretched the video to 8 minutes for the sake of the project!)
